CHAPTER TWELVE

It was morning when they reached the border. Their jaunt through the fortress had taken half the night and exhausted Camelia. Hell, exhausted all of them. But they were alive, and Kano was fucking thrilled.

They’d stolen a Jeep, and once they were far enough from the compound, Kano scoured the vehicle for any sign of a tracker. He’d ripped out the radio already and, finding nothing, resumed the journey off-road while the sisters slept in the back, adrenaline all that kept him from crashing. Cammie whimpered softly, and his heart clenched. He needed to go back into the forest and recover Petru’s body. Once he got them safely back to the caravan, Kano would do just that. Then ... who knew?

Would Dia want to start over? Truly? Being trapped together was one thing, but when they had their freedom, would she still want him? He had a long road to travel until he earned her forgiveness, but he also had a piece of shit cunt to hunt down, too. Danilo’s motivations didn’t matter to him as much as his means—using the vrăji, using Cammie. Kano became an investigative journalist to expose people like Dannie. People like Harrington. He’d started with anonymous tips and mountains of evidence to have Harrington’s hunting buddies arrested for poaching, ensuring public ire by giving reporters everything he had and exposing the network. The best part? Plenty of people hated those assholes for killing species that were protected and endangered. Kano wanted justice for the tiger shifter, but he’d have to deliver that himself. Exposing poachers was one thing. Exposing shifters as a whole? The world wasn’t ready for that.

As he carved a path toward the river, the knowledge that they’d have to go on foot the rest of the way soured an already acerbic mood. He wanted to get to Dia as soon as possible, wanted to hear her sweet voice and pull her beautiful body close. Before that, though, they had to warn the colony about Dannie’s intentions to use them as an army. And to warn the colony, they had to continue on foot. Fuckin’ a.

While the girls rested, he parked the Jeep and then backtracked, covering any tire tracks he found in the soft dirt. Then he shifted and pissed everywhere he could to draw off the dogs and confuse them. Satisfied, he dragged himself back to the vehicle. Sorina looked peaceful if a little disheveled, dark hair tangled around her shoulders. Cammie’s brows were furrowed, mouth a straight line, breathing hard. No kid should have to go through this.

A pang hit him at the thought of Dia’s little sister. She’d gone through worse. So much worse.

“Wakey wakey, ladies,” he cooed.

Sorina stirred first but didn’t open her eyes. “Where are we?” she asked sleepily.

“The border. We need to find a place to cross. I’ve done what I can to cover our tracks.”

“It would be easier if we went through Moldova,” Cammie said, weariness tainting every word, “and went the back way.”

“That will cost us hours,” Sorina countered.
